"The thrust of economic planning in India has always been to bring about an overall socio-economic development coupled with balanced with regional development of the country. The commercial banks are supposed to play a much larger and more dynamic role in this direction.

The present seeks to analyse the regional disparities in commercial banking development in India during 1985-2005. It also endeavour to examine the other changes that have occurred in the field of commercial banking, in the wake of the banking sector reforms in India. The analysis has been carried out with the help of basic banking indicators of branch expansion, deposit mobilization and credit deployment. In order to measure the growth of banking with respect to the selected indicators, linear growth rates have been calculated. The extent and direction of inter-state disparities have been analysed with the help of co-efficient of variation and Herfindahl index. Further, the composite indices of banking development have also been constructed by employing Z-sum technique and principle components analysis. Finally, on the basis of the values of composite scores of banking development, all the states of the country have been classified into different categories.

The book will be of great importance to the students of money and banking. It will be useful to research scholars, teachers, bankers and policy makers alike.
