The concept of development always baffles us. Whereas most of the countries of Europe are developed, South-Asian countries including India have been languishing in underdevelopment. Economists have been forwarding the factors of development and underdevelopment that are intriguing to us. The concept has been looked into from many and diverse angles. But those factors put forward by the economists cannot be universally applicable and to some extent these may vary from culture to culture.

Culture development interface is very much significant in development studies. Here the author has searched the causes of development particularly economic development and under development of the state of Assam through folkloristic approach. This work is mainly based on the case study of important traditional occupations and their impact on economic development of Assam. (jacket)
