India : National Employment Service: Perspective on Development Book

Employment is one of the major objectives in the socio-economic development plans of India. Prospects of increase in employment opportunities lie not so much in the organized sector which employs only about seven per cent of the work force, as in self employment and micro enterprises that collectively form the informal sector. Numerous initiatives have been launched for the promotion of employment. The success of such measures can be enhanced by establishing mechanisms for disseminating information regarding employment opportunities, facilitating employability by guiding the employment seekers to relevant skill development facilities, and making employment opportunities and related service accessible to employment seekers. This study has brought out a number of issues and suggested measures to revamp NES to enable it to play its mandated and pro-active role and make an effective contribution.
