"This book is a complete resource for the Longchen Nyingthig preliminaries. It contains a fresh translation of the liturgy by the first Dodrupchen. Then there are three major commentaries to its, each showing the practice from a different perspective. One by Khyentse Wangpo is a manual of procedures for the practice. One by Yukhog Chadralwa, a highly realized master of the late twentieth century whose works have not been seen in English so far, is an advanced commentary that shows how the preliminaries lead into the main practice of Thorough Cut (Thregcho) and Direct Crossing (Thogal). These two commentaries were written by Tibetans for Tibetans and sometimes need clarification for Westerners. Therefore, the author, a qualified lama of the tradition in his own right, has written an extensive commentary that elucidates the meaning of the liturgy in clear English. It is the first true commentary written by a qualified Western teacher. All three commentaries contain many quotes from great masters of the lineage which give further insight into the meaning of the practice. The author’s commentary contains deep explanations given by the current Dodrupchen in one of his major commentaries. The book includes various other liturgies and prayers which are used as regular supports for the practice.

The book is essential reading for every Longchen Nyingthig preliminaries practitioner. It is important reading for all Dzogchen practitioners because of the way it exposes the terminology and view of the innermost level of Dzogchen teaching."
