Globalization is a complex issues. The current mode of development has not been delivering right goods in right quantities to the majority of the population. Growing unemployment poverty inequality has been putting enormous pressure not only o the developing world but also on the advanced countries. Increasing global inequality and both economic and social inequality in the Indian perspective caused by globalization has been systematically investigated and analyzed by many experts. Important among them are: C.H. Hanumantha Rao, Asis Banerjee, Raj Kumar Sen, V.R. Panchmukhi, S.R. Hashim etc. and others. Research articles of experts have been organized into three main parts.
The papers presented offer fresh insights pm the linkages between globalization and GDP growth rates as well as inequality. The papers bring out that the last two decades of globalization have witnessed rising growth rates in GDP along with growing income inequalities in several developing economies including India. The proportion of people living below the poverty line has been declining but at a lower pace than in the preglobalization era. However, there seems to be no unambiguous causal relationship between the rise in GDP growth rates and rising income inequalities or slow reduction in poverty. This experience suggests that initial or pre-reform domestic socio-economic conditions as well as post-reform policies, which considerably vary across countries, could be mainly responsible for rising inequalities and slow reduction in poverty in many countries in the wake of globalization.
According to the papers presented, policy action on the domestic front is central to reducing inequalities in income and wealth in the wake of globalization. This argues for holistic paradigm of development for ushering in maximum human welfare for the greatest number people. The essence of the papers in the book is : globalization should have a human face reducing inequality to tolerable level.
