"The book focuses on the status of socio-economic backwardness in Mewat region. It brings out specifically low level of agricultural productivity, low level of literacy rate, low level of health status, low level of irrigation ratio, low level of use of high yielding varieties seeds, low level of use of chemical fertilisers and low level of agricultural credit on the one hand and high level of unemployment, high level of poverty, high level of indebtedness, high level of dependency-ratio and lopsided excessive agricultural mechanisation, on the other hand. The book, in particular, brings out disparities in several variables of development for Mewat region in comparison to averages for district Gurgaon and Faridabad (taken together) and for Haryana. These variables were purposefully chosen to highlight the existing disparities in the development of agriculture. The agriculture is the mainstay of the people in the Mewat region where in 98 per cent of work force derive their livelihood from this activity, development of this sector is the most desirable and obvious policy option, among other things. The book also presents a package of suggestions to activate socio-economic development so that Mewat region is brought into mainstream development process of the nation."
